Music For Contemporary Dance packages together Peter Broderick's compositions for soundtracking choreography. The two scores compiled for this release are Music For Falling From Trees and Music For Congregation, the first being a suite for piano and strings previously released by Erased Tapes to great acclaim (on this very site, among a good many others), while the latter is a new work, commissioned by artists Kit Monkman and Tom Wexler, aka KMA. Congregation is said to be "The world's first ever ballet designed, choreographed and composed entirely for pedestrian performers" and is set to debut simultaneously in Shanghai and Bournemouth before further performances at Tate Britain. After the swooningly grand and emotive Falling From Trees, the score to Congregation feels more fully developed in terms of its arrangements and perhaps slightly more experimental in tone too. As you'll no doubt have come to expect from Broderick, his take on contemporary classical music never fails to be accessible, and sure enough, this four-part cycle is ravishingly lovely to the ear, peaking with the almost Sigur Ros-like post-rock ascent of 'Part 3: Differences'.

Four years after the release of their debut album Outflow, Japan’s Small Color, a duo comprised of Rie Yoshihara (aka Trico!) (accordion, voice, vintage keyboard instruments) and Yusuke Onishi (guitar, banjo, bass, programming and production) are back with the beautifully polished In Light. This album marks what some may consider a departure for 12k: sublime and gentle, minimal, acoustic J-pop, which once may have been destined for the now-defunct Happy label, but can now sit comfortably beside 12k’s roster of electronic/acoustic ambient hybrids.

For the past 4 years, Small Color has been performing live and honing their sound. Inspired mostly by the very act of performing and the way their sound relates to interactions with a live audience, In Light is truly a mature album with a very focused aesthetic. Being primarily an acoustic band, their recordings are not created in front of a computer screen. With the musicianship of Yoshihara, an accomplished accordion player and instructor, and Onishi, who plays guitar for many artists in Japan, live performance and songwriting are what Small Color is all about, as is quite evident on In Light.

Small Color’s sound encompasses many moods in its modest shell: joy, sorrow, love and sadness, the feelings of everyday life, with influences from such diverse musical genres as jazz, world music, pop and experimentalism, as well as design, architecture and cooking (Rie is an accomplished chef and has a recipe book being published in the near future). Their songs are delicate yet rich in texture, brimming with the warm sounds of electric pianos, acoustic guitar, glockenspiel, accordion, toy pianos and a studio full of other instruments accented by small beatboxes, electronic sprinklings, and Rie’s faraway and lulling voice with lyrics in both Japanese and English.

The first 1000 copies of In Light will be packaged in a full-color slipcase over the ubiquitous 12k digipack and the release of the CD will coincide with the digital-only release of the remixed single fora “Hikari No Hana.”

Type Records alumnus Khonnor makes an appearance on Moodgadget with a selection of new tracks charting a direction that's ostensibly far removed from the introspective sketches that populated his celebrated Handwriting LP. 'Nibble-O' immediately takes you by surprise, tapping into a melodic breakcore mode that's got as much to do with Drukqs-era Aphex Twin as it does the desolate melodicism of those early Khonnor recordings. Likewise, 'Kite Tits' makes steps towards that classic Rephlex Braindance sound, though Khonnor's production is never quite so straight-forward as that, and a homespun unpredictability creeps into the mix just when you think you've got the measure of it. Elsewhere the songwriting elements are more prevalent, though they do tend to be buried in short-form scribbles like the quietly rather wonderful 'Calico Dong Veil' and the detuned, thinned out digital gauze of 'An Ode To Gary Giggles'. Although the material is characteristically wayward, erratic and difficult to pin down, somehow when digested as a whole this EP actually makes a lot of sense.

Oskar Hallbert is a musician who lives in a house in the woods in the north Sweden. The EP "Sids apartment" on Rainmusic has been one of Zymogen's favourite album of 2008 and we luckily got in touch with him to plan the re-release of "1123581321345589". Previously released in 50 copies on a small american CD-r lable. "1123581321345589" is a concept album on the Fibonacci numbers. Oskar writes:
"I'm interested in numbers, and I'm interested in failuers. Fibonacci tried to make a number sequence that would show how a population of rabbits grew. Turns out his number sequence is worhless if you try to show how a Rabbit population grows - BUT he unwillingly discovered something far more interesting. Turns out that the Fibonacci numbers appear everywhere in nature, in the proportion of our bodies, in the way that sunflowers organize there seeds, in the way branches grow on a tree and the way leafs grow on the branches, in the way eagles fly towards their preys -everywhere. The Fibonacci numbers are the closest we've got to mathematicly understand the laws by wich our world is created. It's a quite personal album. I like my music to be somewhat documentary. Almost all songs are based on an improvisation, and then digital editing and overdubbing, arranging and more overdubbing and more editing. Most of the snippets origin from my mp3-player, with wich I've recorded stuff that happend and places I've visit. They make a mosaique, that sums up my life during the time I made the songs. And there is a few sampels, a little from the tv show "This is our music", one from the movie "Harrold and Maude" ,..., and of course Sture Dahlstrom, one my favorite authors (who played jazz before he started writing). He goes: "I haven't tuch my guitar for 40 years now, guess I wanna know if there's still some music in me." I was really into Fibonaccis numbers at the time, it's a beautiful sequence. And I just liked the idea of a record with 89 tracks. And I needed something to arrange my music around. The number sequence did it."
